MARSHALL, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team was dealt a pair of tough losses Friday at Missouri Valley falling 2-1 and 5-2 in the Heart South Division double-header.
A pitcher's duel in game one saw Dustin Eby and the Vikings' Tyler Penix battle in a pair of complete game efforts. Eby was handed the loss as he allowed just two runs, both coming in the fourth inning, and struck out seven.
Penix scattered seven hits through seven innings as he also struck out seven. He allowed one Evangel run coming in the top of the seventh with eight Crusaders being left on base in the game.
The second game saw a solid pitching performance from the Vikings' Vincent Flores as Evangel starter Mason Baur tossed the first three innings. Ben Loge entered in the fourth and allowed just one run and two hits in relief.
Both teams scored in the first inning as Missouri Valley answered a single run by Evangel with three runs in the home half of the inning. The Vikings added runs in the third and fifth innings after the Crusaders scored in the top of the fifth inning to pull within 4-2.
Evangel and Missouri Valley finish a four-game series on Saturday in Marshall, Missouri. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
