SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Late free throws and a defensive block at the buzzer helped the Evangel men's basketball team hold off Baker, 66-65, in an exciting finish Thursday night.
Clark Brewington was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws with 13 seconds left to give Evangel a one-point lead.
After a three-point miss by Baker, the Crusaders were fouled and missed a pair of free throws giving the Wildcats another opportunity with four seconds left in the game.
Ike Egwu leaped in and blocked the Wildcats' layup attempt at the buzzer sealing the victory for Evangel.
Evangel started each half jumping out to an eight-point lead in the first half before overcoming a 36-32 halftime deficit. The Crusaders started the second half with a four-point play by Brewington who was fouled after making a three to help build a 13-point lead.
Brewington finished with 11 points and seven rebounds as Chris Stocks led the Crusaders with 18 points.
Pavel Antonov checked in with a double-double finishing with 14 points and 13 boards in the win.
Baker was led by 26 points from Brandon Clifford who also earned a double-double with 13 rebounds.
Evangel finishes its homestand on Saturday against Clarke University. Tipoff from the Ashcroft Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
