KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Evangel women's basketball team was picked to finish 10th in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Coaches Preseason Poll released Thursday.
First-year head coach Megan Leuzinger has quickly put her mark on a team that finished 13th in the Heart last season and returns just five players off last year's squad. All-American Sydnee Garrett will be joined by fellow seniors Mackenzie Farmer and Casy Askins to help add leadership and scoring for Evangel in 2018-19.
Junior Kylee Moore and sophomores Desi Ennes and Savannah Ellis round out the returners for the Crusaders who finished 5-24 overall and 4-15 in conference play. However, Evangel welcomes some new faces that will make an immediate impact and was recognized by the voting in the coaches poll.
Junior transfers, Lexie Vaught and Shelby Roder are again teammates and rejoin Moore after going separate ways following a run of state championships at Crane High School. Vaught comes to Evangel after two seasons at Drury, while Roder also rejoins Garrett who she was a teammate with at North Ark Community College.
The defending regular season and tournament champion, Central Methodist tops the poll, as MidAmerica Nazarene was picked second. Benedictine and William Penn tied for third as Grand View rounds out the top five.
Evangel tips off the season November 3, at Park University in Kansas City, as Luezinger and the Crusaders make their home debut, Tuesday, November 6, against Stephens College.
