CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A quick start saw the Evangel women's basketball team lead from start to finish Saturday, 60-55, at Mount Mercy in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 22-4 lead in the first half and never trailed the entire 40 minutes. Evangel shot 43 percent in the first half while holding the Mustangs to a 26 percent clip from the field.
Mount Mercy battled back in the second half to pull within nine at the end of the third quarter and as close as three in the final minute. However, Kylee Moore made a pair of free throws to extend the lead back to five before Lexie Vaught blocked a shot attempt followed with an Emma Lander rebound to help preserve the win.
Mackenzie Farmer led Evangel with 19 points and four assists, while Brianna Vogts added 18 points off the bench. Vaught chipped in with 11 points and six steals helping Evangel finish with a season-high 17 steals as a team.
Mount Mercy was led by Sara Blowers and Aurianna Hampton each scoring 13 points for the Mustangs.
Evangel continues road action with a midweek matchup at Benedictine who sits in fourth place in the Heart standings, just 2.5 games ahead of the Crusaders. Tipoff from Atchison, Kansas is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
