SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Evangel University director of athletics Dr. Dennis McDonald announced the addition of Scott Metcalf as the assistant director of athletics for compliance, student success, and athletics alumni engagement.
"I am incredibly excited to return to Evangel, where I spent nearly two decades investing in students' lives," said Metcalf. "I truly think the best for Evangel and Evangel athletics is yet to come. I look forward to being back and helping Dr. McDonald, the coaches, and student-athletes."
After graduating from Evangel in 1984, Metcalf found his way back to an Evangel coaching staff in some fashion from 1991 to 2009. He led the Evangel football team as the head coach from 2002 to 2009, where he was the second-winningest coach, having won 44 games, including finishing as the 2005 Heart Conference Champions. Evangel advanced to the quarterfinals in the NAIA playoffs, going 9-3 and being named the Heart Coach of the Year.
"I am extremely excited to add Scott to an already outstanding Evangel Athletics staff," added McDonald. "Scott brings a servant's heart to help us reach our mission to see our student-athletes excel in their spiritual walk, in the classroom, and in competition. He also provides a sharp mind to help us meet the challenges we have to ensure NAIA compliance and the goals we have to establish strong connections with our athletics alumni. We are ready for Scott to start organizing a newly established all-sports booster club."
Evangel reached the postseason twice under Metcalf as he led a team to Kyrgyzstan in 2008 as part of a football camp and tournament mission trip. In addition to his mission work, he has helped with football clinics in Barcelona, Spain, since 2018. He has also led teams in projects with Convoy of Hope, Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, Springfield Victory Mission, and international trips to Spain and Africa.
Most recently, he has served as the Fitness Center Director at River Fitness Center at James River Church in Ozark, Missouri. Since 2021 he has also been an adjunct professor at Evangel.
In addition to his coaching stops at Evangel, Metcalf has spent time at Springfield area schools, Hillcrest and Glendale. He was also a graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan University and offensive coordinator at Urbana University.
He has been a member of the America Football Coaches Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Metcalf takes over for Steve Gause, who moves into a new role at Evangel in student development.
