SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team was swept by Missouri Valley in Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 7-3 and 6-5. In game one, the Crusaders came out hot on offensively but couldn't sustain it and eventually the Vikings were able to claw back into the game. Game two again saw the Crusaders start the game fast
The first game saw the Crusaders start off hot. They scored all three of their runs in the first inning off three RBI singles by Mason Baur, Harold Alvarez, and Noah Suiter. In total they had five hits in the first inning. However, during the rest of the innings, they only managed three hits.
Bryan Adames pitched four innings and was credited with a no-decision. He gave up two runs off four hits, with two strikeouts and one walk. Levi Loughridge was given the loss and pitched 2.1 innings, giving up five runs off five hits, while striking out two and walking two. Zach Johnston also pitched .2 innings and gave up one hit.
The Crusaders again came out hitting, scoring two runs in the first inning. Harrison Stevens went yard on the second pitch he saw, followed by an RBI double from Baur that scored Jose Vargas from second. The Vikings would then score one run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.
The Crusaders would respond in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring two of their own. Evangel got the bases loaded with two outs, and then Patrick Gaul was walked to bring in the first run of the inning. Then Jose Vargas was hit by a pitch to bring home another run and take the lead 4-3. Baur would then line out to center to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.
The Vikings would then go on to score two more runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead a 5-4. The Crusaders would tie the game in the sixth after Gaul tripled and came around to score after Vargas reached base after an error by the center fielder. The Vikings would retake the lead for good in the eight.
Baur pitched 5.0 innings and was credited with the loss. He gave up five runs off six hits, with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Austin Dill pitched 2.0 innings giving up one hit, striking out three, and walking one. Zach Johnston pitched 1.0 inning giving up one run off two hits and walking one. Bret Hoffman pitched 1.0 inning striking out one and walking one.
Evangel will hit the road next weekend to take on Benedictine in Atchison, Kan. They will play one game on Friday, April 12 starting at one p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 starting at one p.m.
