SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel baseball's offense exploded in the doubleheader sweep over the Lincoln Lynx.
The Crusaders came out swinging in game one, scoring six run in the bottom of the first. It started with Jordan Yates being issued a walk. Noah Suiter followed with a singled, then Grant Miller was also walked to load the bases. Dalton Cook hit a two RBI single, then Stephen Belcher hit an RBI double that left runners on the corners. Rafael Rodriguez walked and then Grant Kosanke hit into a fielder's choice that plated two. Finally, Nathan Lamb was walked and then Patrick Gaul hit into an RBI fielder's choice to end the first inning.
Evangel was kept quiet until the fifth inning when they plated three off an RBI groundout from Gaul and a two RBI single from Suiter.
The Crusaders continue to pile on in the sixth when they scored seven runs. The first two batters of the inning reached via a walk and then Rodriguez brought them home with a two RBI double off the left field wall. Then pinch hitter Parker Dinwiddie was hit by a pitch, and Gaul brought them both home with a triple to deep center field. Yates followed that up with an RBI single of his own. Two hit by pitches and a walk loaded the bases for pinch hitter Joel Simmons, who was walked to bring in the last run of the inning.
Evangel finished the day with 16 runs off ten hits and no errors. Gaul was 2 for 5 with four RBIs, while Suiter and Rodriguez were both 2 for 3 with two RBIs apiece. Cook also had 3 RBIs in the game.
In game two the Crusaders kept up the offensive attack, scoring three runs in both the third and fourth innings, after falling behind 1-0 in the second, to win the game.
Lamb got it started with a leadoff walk, then Gaul doubled to left center field. Yates hit a sac fly to score both runners. Suiter followed it with a single, then Belcher tripled to bring him home.
In the fourth, Jason Jarrell was walked to lead thing off, then both Kosanke and Lamb were able to bunt safely for hits to load the bases for Gaul, who hit an RBI sac fly to center. A wild pitch scored Kosanke, while Lamb scored on a RBI sac fly by Yates.
Lam was 2 for 2 in the game, while Yates had 2 RBIs courtesy of two sac flies.
Evangel will end their non-conference slate by hosting local rival College of the Ozarks for a doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch for game one is slated for noon.
