Austin Dill Pitches Gem to Help Evangel Baseball Split at Culver-Stockton

CANTON, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team got a solid pitching performance in game two earning a split with Culver-Stockton on Saturday with a 4-3 win following a 10-4 setback in game one of the Heart Conference double-header.

Game 1
Evangel was unable to string together hits leaving five runners on base in the 10-4 loss. Evangel fell behind in the bottom of the second inning after tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the second.

A string of errors helped the Wildcats post a four-run second inning a four-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach. The Crusaders scored twice in the top of the seventh but was unable to finish the comeback.

Pat Gaul and Stephen Belcher each finished with a pair of hits, while Jordan Yates was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. The two hits extended Gaul's hit streak to 15-games before a pair of hits in the second game pushed the streak to 16 consecutive games.

Hunter Hancock went two innings as he was charged with just two of the five runs with two strikeouts. Sam Tiller pitched 3.2 innings and was charged with the remaining five hits out of the bullpen.

Game 2
Junior Austin Dill shutdown Culver-Stockton in game two as he held the Wildcats hitless through the first five innings. A triple in the sixth followed four more hits in the seventh before Zach Johnston came on to earn his third save of the season.

Dill improved to 3-0 as he struck out four and walked two over 6.1 innings.

Offensively, Gaul extended his hit streak with a single to lead off the game before adding a triple in the second inning. Gaul added an RBI and scored twice as Jordan Yates and Preston Allmand picked up the other two hits for the Crusaders in the pitcher's duel.

Evangel opens Heart South Division play next weekend on the road at No. 20 Central Methodist. The three-game series with start on Friday at noon with a double-header on Saturday starting at noon as well.
