Valor Baseball Drops Two Against Surging Baker Offense

The Basics

Game 1: Evangel 2, Baker 12 | Box Score

Game 2: Evangel 6, Baker 15 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (17-25, 8-18), Baker (25-20, 16-10)

Location: Baldwin City, Kan. (Sauder Field)

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Evangel took on the Baker Wildcats on Friday in their final road weekend doubleheader of the season. The Valor struggled on offense in game one, ultimately falling to the Wildcats, 12-2. In game two, Evangel showed promise in the final two innings of the game, but the damage had been done, resulting in a 15-6 loss for EU.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Baker used a strong first inning in game one to distance themselves from Evangel on the scoreboard and maintained their lead throughout the game.

  • Although the Wildcats scored more runs in game one than game two, the Valor found more offense in the late innings to inch closer to Baker's lead, but came up just short.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Baker used multiple Evangel miscues to score six runs in the first inning, giving the Wildcats a quick 6-0 lead.

  • The Valor answered Baker's huge first inning with two runs of their own in the third when Gage Harris was scored on a Noah Suiter single and Mason Hansen reached home when Baker walked Kale Hynes with the bases loaded, giving Evangel just a four run deficit, 6-2.

  • Baker matched Evangel's top of the third with a two run bottom of the third, re-extending their lead to six runs, 8-2.

  • The Wildcats used a three run home run to push the game out of reach in the fourth inning and tacked on an insurance run on a sacrifice fly to push the score to 12-2.

  • Evangel generated just one hit after scoring their lone two runs in game one, as they fell 12-2.

  • In game two, Baker used their first five innings to score 14 unanswered runs, distancing themselves from any chance at a Valor comeback.

  • In the sixth inning, Evangel found the scoreboard when Brock Wendlandt singled to score Athanie Leeviraphan who had singled to get on base. The Valor tacked on an additional run in the same inning when Eric Scott singled to score Wendlandt, making it a 14-2 game.

  • Baker added their 15th run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, but Evangel fought hard and hung tough in the final inning of the game, scoring four runs. Wendlandt continued to bat well when he doubled to score both Jeremy Vickers and Suiter, who had been hit by a pitch to get on base.

  • In Evangel's next at bat, Nathan Weatherly hit a two run home run to right field, narrowing the Baker lead to just nine runs, but the game ended on the next at bat with Evangel falling short, 15-6.

NOTABLE

  • Wendlandt had an impressive day at the plate, going 3-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

  • Weatherly went 2-2 at the plate in game two against Baker, finishing with two RBIs, a run, and his first career home run.
