Dill Sets Season Strikeout Record as Valor Falls to MNU

Dill Sets Season Strikeout Record as Valor Falls to MNU

The Basics

Game 1: Evangel 0, MidAmerica Nazarene 1 | Box Score

Game 2: Evangel 11, MidAmerica Nazarene 19 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (19-29, 10-22), MidAmerica Nazarene (33-14, 26-6)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (University Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – On the final day of baseball in Springfield, Evangel took on the Pioneers of MidAmerica Nazarene, looking to split the final series of the season. In game one, Austin Dill pitched lights out, setting the single season strikeout record in Evangel history and allowing just one run to score on a passed ball. The offense could not help him out as Evangel ultimately fell, 1-0. Game two was a completely different ball game as runs came easily and both offenses played well. By the time the dust had settled on the game, the Pioneers had come away with the victory, 19-11.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dill pitched well in game one, striking out 10 Pioneer batters, but the Valor fell 1-0, after generating just five hits.

  • Evangel recorded 14 hits in the second game of the afternoon, scoring in each of the first five innings, but the MNU offense showed their potency, scoring 19 runs on 20 hits, taking the win, 19-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • To kick off the first game of the afternoon, MNU used a triple and scored their lone run of the game on a passed ball.

  • The Valor left two runners stranded in the second, third, and sixth innings, as the Pioneer's starting pitching contained the Evangel offense to a minimum.

  • Dill did not allow a run for the remainder of the game, but the lone run was enough to give MNU the 1-0 victory.

  • Game two got off to a quick start when MNU scored a run on a single up the middle. Evangel quickly answered in the bottom of the first with a run of their own on a Noah Suiter single to center field, scoring Athanie Leeviraphan, who had tripled to get on base.

  • MNU quickly retook the lead in the second inning, scoring nine runs on seven hits, giving the Pioneers a 10-1 lead.

  • Evangel continued to swing the bat well, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kale Hynes, Nathan Lamb, and Holton Simmons all singled to load the bases for Stephen Belcher, who singled to score a run. Gage Harris hit into a fielder's choice and scored Lamb, while Mason Hansen hit a sacrifice fly to score Simmons. Suiter scored the final run of the inning when he singled to score Harris, making it a 10-5 game.

  • MNU and EU matched each other on the scoreboard in the third inning as both teams pushed two runs across to score. Hynes walked and had Jace Niehs come in to run. Simmons also walked and Hansen promptly doubled to right field to score them both.

  • The Valor cut down the Pioneer lead by two runs in the fourth inning, as Dalton Cook walked and had Aidan Satterfield run. Hynes also forced his second walk of the day and Lamb singled to left field, scoring Satterfield. Belcher singled immediately after, scoring Hynes, and Harris singled up the middle to score Lamb, making it a 13-10 game.

  • MidAmerica regained their lead and pushed it to a larger margin by scoring six runs in the top of the fifth, as Evangel could not record an out on the mound. In the bottom of the fifth, Cook smashed a home run to center field, fittingly in his final at-bat of his career, trimming the MNU lead to eight runs.

  • Cook's solo shot in the fifth was the final run to be scored as Zach Johnston and Dylan Gallup closed the door on the hot Pioneer offense. EU did not make any noise on offense in the final inning, as they fell, 19-11, in the final game of the 2022 season.

QUOTABLE

"I'm proud of the guys' efforts and attitudes, especially in the midst of adversity this season," Evangel head coach Tyler Henry stated. "I'm also grateful to our seniors for their leadership this season, they will be missed!"

NOTABLE

  • Dill set the new strikeouts in a season record for Evangel, finishing his season with 89 strikeouts and 236 in his career.

  • Cook recorded his third home run of the weekend in game two, his final at bat of his career.

  • MNU and Evangel combined for 34 hits throughout the second game of the afternoon.
