LAMONI, Iowa – A late run to end the first half helped the Evangel men's basketball team pull away from Graceland 94-79 Wednesday night in Heart Conference action.
Evangel improved to 11-8 on the season and 7-6 in Heart Conference play while Graceland fell to 7-12 overall and 4-9 in league action. The Crusaders snapped a streak of four consecutive road losses with the win while sweeping the season series against the Yellowjackets.
The final 3:46 of the first half saw the Crusaders go on a 16-2 run to take a 39-25 lead into the locker room. Cade Coffman's layup started the run as the sophomore finished with a season-high 25 points.
Defensively, Evangel forced 23 turnovers by the Yellowjackets and scored 21 points off turnovers to help pull away.
Both teams picked up their shooting in the second half with Graceland shooting 54 percent from the field and Evangel shooting 51 percent. The Crusaders helped seal the win going a season-best 31 of 42 from the free-throw line.
Graceland was led by Virgil Walker Jr., who finished with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Evangel returns home Saturday to host Mount Mercy looking for a season split after falling 85-77 in November. Tipoff from the Ashcroft Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
