MARSHALL, Mo. – A barrage of three-pointers by the Evangel men's basketball team helped lead the Crusaders to a 92-88 victory at Missouri Valley on Thursday night.
The Crusaders buried 17 three-pointers to help pick up a much-needed road win and inch closer to securing a spot in the Heart Postseason Tournament. A multitude of scenarios still exist but Thursday night's win gives Evangel a season sweep of Missouri Valley and Baker, which also allows the Crusaders to hold any tie-breaker scenarios over both teams.
Twelve first-half three-pointers by the Crusaders helped build a 55-43 halftime lead. Sophomore Cade Coffman knocked down seven three-pointers in the first half as he finished with a game-high 31 points on 9 of 14 from the field.
Clark Brewington added four three-pointers to finish with 16 points as Evangel led by as many as 15 points before the Vikings rallied back late in the second half.
Missouri Valley cut the Evangel lead to two points at 90-88 with 1:21 left, but Coffman was fouled on a drive to the basket. Coffman hit both free throws with 14 seconds left as Evangel got a stop on the defensive end to seal the win. Coffman also led the way with nine boards.
The Crusaders recorded 23 assists as a team, while Edriel Martinborough also finished in double figures with 11 points.
Missouri Valley was led by Mason Schlotzhauer and Alonzo Williams each finishing with 16 points.
Evangel returns home Saturday for the regular-season finale against No. 23 Clarke. Tipoff from the Ashcroft Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
