Valor Defense Delivers Overtime Win Over Benedictine

Valor Defense Delivers Overtime Win Over Benedictine

The Basics
Final: (RV) Evangel 58, Benedictine 53 (OT) | Final Stats
Records: Evangel (15-6, 8-4); Benedictine (13-8, 7-5)
Site: Ralph Moody Gymnasium

ATCHISON, Kan. Evangel turned in a shutdown defensive performance to register a 58-53 overtime victory over Benedictine in a showdown of Heart of America Athletic Conference South Division co-leaders Wednesday evening at Ralph Moody Gymnasium.

The Valor limited Benedictine to 26 percent shooting (16-of-61) and held the Ravens scoreless over the final four minutes of overtime, while converting 7-of-11 free-throw attempts to seal the victory—EU's eighth win in 11 road contests this season.

Evangel built an early 12-point advantage behind a fast start to the contest, but had to overcome a six-point, second-half deficit to force the extra period. Once there, the Valor defense put the clamps on the Ravens, who shot just 1-of-9 from the floor in overtime.

That was one more field goal that Evangel tallied in the extra frame, but the Valor cashed in at the charity stripe to secure the outcome. Autry Acord knocked down 4-of-7 free throws, including the go-ahead pair with 2:38 left on the clock. As the EU defense was forcing six straight BC misses from the field to end the contest, Manrique Alvarado hit two more free throws to make it a four-point game, and Acord added one more successful foul shot with seven seconds to play.

Cade Coffman led Evangel with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Josh Pritchett and Stephen Salvi each added 10 points for the Valor.

Evangel appeared to be poised for a big offensive night in the early stages of the contest, bursting from the gate to score 20 of the game's first 28 points. Coffman buried a pair of three-pointers, and Jace Coffie added five points during the run to stake EU to the early advantage.

But the Ravens rallied to even the score with a 13-2 run of their own. Acord's three-point play helped the Valor take a one-point lead into the locker room, only to see BC score nine unanswered points in the opening minutes of the second half to seize a 33-27 lead behind the play of Ahmad Louis.

Coffman brought the Valor back with another three, before Salvi's triple with 8:45 to play put EU back on top, 38-37.

The two clubs traded blows throughout the final eight minutes, with neither squad leading by more than two points. Coffman made 1-of-2 free throws to give EU a 51-49 lead with 15 seconds left in regulation, but Louis was fouled seven seconds later and converted both foul shots to send the game to the extra period.

Louis led all scorers with 17 points, as Benedictine finished the game just 6-of-32 (0.188) from beyond the arc.

Evangel shot 0.298 (17-of-58) from the floor and hit just 16-of-27 (0.593) from the free-throw line as a team, but forced 15 turnovers and received 28 points from its bench.

Evangel, which received votes in Wednesday's NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, returns to the Ashcroft Center for another first-place matchup Saturday (Jan. 29), when the Valor takes on the nation's top-ranked squad, William Penn, in a 2 p.m. contest.
