FULTON, Mo. – Valor Men's Soccer hit the road on Monday evening, looking to grab their first road win since 2019 against the Owls of William Woods. Despite a strong offensive attack throughout the night, Evangel could not get the ball in the back of the net and fell to William Woods, 1-0.
The Valor came out firing to begin the game, controlling the ball for the majority of the half and getting several shots on goal. At the 11 minute mark of the first half, Evangel had three consecutive shots that were turned away by excellent defense by the opposing goalkeeper. Evangel continued to generate offense and kept the ball in the attacking zone, but continued to just narrowly miss their opportunity to score, taking the game to the half tied at 0-0.
Evangel did not slow down on offense to open the second half and again found many opportunities to score. William Woods had very few chances to score all night, but in the 73rd minute of the night, the Owls found their first excellent opportunity and capitalized by scoring and grabbing a 1-0 lead. Just six minutes later, Evangel was awarded their best opportunity to score of the night. A penalty in the box in the 79th minute allowed Matheus Porzelt the chance to even the score at a goal a piece. Porzelt's shot was just narrowly too high and kept the score at 1-0. The Valor continued to push the pace offensively, but were unable to get another shot on goal as the William Woods defense secured the 1-0 win.
Evangel recorded 27 shots in the game, their most in a match since 2016.
Rem Harmsworth led the Valor charge with five shots on the night, three of which were on goal. Porzelt also added three shots on goal for the Valor.
The Valor have moved to 0-2 all time against William Woods after the 1-0 loss.
"The guys played our system really well and created chance after chance in the WWU attacking 3rd. The stat sheet shows we outshot them, 27-10 (17-3 On Goal). We missed several early opportunities and even a pk. They caught us on a counter and our back line was high for the lone score," Men's Soccer Head Coach Kyle Beard stated. "We have to get a little more disciplined with our structure and stay calm in heated situations. As a coach it is a tough scenario, because we played really well. We simply have to learn and move on. We have a lot of potential to be a very competitive team this year if we learn from this."
Evangel will return to the pitch on Friday when they travel to Leavenworth, Kan., to take on Saint Mary (Kan.) at 5:00 p.m.
