ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After drawing their first non-loss result in a tie last Friday with Saint Mary's, Evangel Men's Soccer traveled to St. Louis to take on Harris-Stowe State, where they would claim their first victory since April 1st, 2020.
The Hornets began the game with a strong offensive pressure, collecting several shots in the first half. Evangel began to ramp up the offense and hit four shots on goal, with a shot by Andrew Flippin nearly scoring, hitting off the post. With under seven minutes remaining, the Valor found a fast break opportunity and Lucas Arias nailed the Valor's second goal of the season, their first of the game, to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Valor knew they needed to continue their strong offensive attack. Harris-Stowe outshot Evangel to start the half, but a nice pass led to a Dean McConnell fast break and he nailed an excellent shot to give Evangel a 2-0 lead, their first game scoring two goals since Oct. 27th of 2021. Knowing they still had 21 minutes of game to play, Evangel began to focus on the defensive side of the ball. The Hornets grew aggressive on offense and with 14 minutes remaining, scoring a goal to narrow the deficit to just a goal. After the goal was scored, Evangel began to not allow much on offense for Harris-Stowe. In the final 10 minutes, the Valor allowed just two shots, which goalie Anthony Morales stuffed, giving EU their elusive first win since 2020.
In just three games coached, Kyle Beard has led EU to a 1-1-1 record.
Flippin led EU with two shots on goal.
Both Arias and McConnell recorded their first goals of the season in the 2-1 victory.
Morales finished with six saves in goal.
"It was a smaller field than usual and our team responded well to the adjustment. They (HSSU) were very physical and we had to really keep our heads and play calm. We pressed the back line very aggressively and got a great opportunity in the first half to get a late corner. Our guys just kept heading back in after the first couple of saves and Chris Tadeo very carefully placed back into Lucas who headed right over the keeper," Men's Soccer Head Coach Kyle Beard stated. "In the 2nd half we came out flying looking to create another opportunity and Dean caught the defense not covering him and scored an absolute world class goal. We had to make a substitution late for a great defender, but our defense played exceptional throughout the night. The first win was always going to be a hard fought process and this game was definitely that. Our guys had to play to the end to get it. I'm really proud of them."
Evangel will conclude their road trip Saturday (Sept. 10) at Freed-Hardeman in Henderson, Tenn., at 6:00 p.m.
