Last Minute Goal Proves Detrimental in Valor Men's Soccer Loss on Saturday

Last Minute Goal Proves Detrimental in Valor Men's Soccer Loss on Saturday

The Basics

Score: Evangel 1, Freed-Hardeman 2 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (1-2-1), Freed-Hardeman (3-1-0)

Location: Henderson, Tenn. (Lion Field)

HENDERSON, Tenn. – After recording their first win since 2020, Valor Men's Soccer looked to build off the victory and continue their success this season. Facing off against a solid Freed-Hardeman team, Evangel came up just short of taking down the Lions, falling 2-1 on Saturday night.

In the first 15 minutes of the match, neither team generated much on offense as passes were being intercepted around mid-field by both squads. Freed-Hardeman broke the scoreless tie in the 19th minute with a goal on a sliding kick, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead. Just one minutes and 11 seconds had passed and Evangel had quickly re-tied the game at 1-1, when James Bourke-Nuku scored his first goal of the season on a run into the box off a Matheus Porzelt corner kick. Evangel kept the pressure on the Lions goalkeeper, but no more shots were scored in the first half, making it a 1-1 game at halftime.

Freed-Hardeman outshot Evangel 7-2 in the second half, but the Valor defense continued to stand tall. Shots were turned aside by excellent team defense and it appeared that the Valor and Lions would be ending the game in a tie result. With just 1:18 remaining on the clock, Freed-Hardeman would score the game-winning goal, giving the Lions a 2-1 win as the Valor could not score in the final minute.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior Barboza and Koen Beard recorded shots on goal in the match for Evangel.

  • Evangel recorded six shots throughout 90 minutes of play, trailing the Lions by five shots.
