Early Goal Plays Factor in Valor Men's Soccer Loss to Benedictine

Early Goal Plays Factor in Valor Men's Soccer Loss to Benedictine

The Basics

Score: Evangel 0, Benedictine 1 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (1-4-1, 0-2-0), Benedictine (4-3-1, 1-1-0)

Location: Atchison, Kan. (Legacy Field)

ATCHISON, Kan. – Valor Men's Soccer traveled to Atchison on Saturday to take on the Ravens of Benedictine. After conceding an early goal, Evangel's defense played lights out, not allowing another goal to be scored. Ultimately, the goal was enough to give the Ravens a 1-0 win as Evangel could not find the back of the net over regulation.

The first half got out to a quick start when at the 1:51 mark, a Benedictine attacker caught the Evangel defense off guard and scored the first shot of the day to take an early 1-0 lead. Despite the early score, Evangel fought hard against the Ravens and the defense played a great first half. Although Benedictine recorded shots, goalie Anthony Morales and the Valor defense stymied any goal attempt in the remaining 43 minutes of the first half. At the 16 minute mark of the game, Evangel's Leonardo Borges recorded Evangel's first shot on goal, which was saved by the Ravens goalkeeper. This was the extent of the Valor offense in the first half as they trailed, 1-0, heading into the break.

Evangel kicked off the second half with a near goal at the 54:48 mark when Chris Tadeo nearly scored on an excellent bicycle kick. The Valor continued to play excellent defense and record great shot opportunities, but each one was saved by the Benedictine goalie. Spencer Chevalier, Sage Ballard, and James Bourke-Nuku all had excellent opportunities in the second half that came up just short. By the time the 90 minutes had expired, Benedictine had claimed the win, 1-0.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Five Valor players recorded shots on goal in the loss.

  • Morales played well in goal tonight, securing six saves.

QUOTABLE

"Our team could have easily gotten down on themselves after allowing an early goal, but we fought with Valor. Our men picked themselves up and continued to fight, not allowing the early goal to slow them down," Men's Soccer Head Coach Kyle Beard stated. "We found many opportunities in the second half and Tadeo and Ballard's shots on goal were nearly equalizers. We definitely wanted a different result, but I'm proud of the resiliency our team showed against a very good conference squad."
