ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Evangel men's and women's tennis teams recorded triumphant debuts Saturday, sweeping the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in the first dual action since the reinstatement of the two programs.
The EU men (6-1) won all three doubles contests from UHSP, including matching 6-0 victories by the duos of Sam Coryell/Christian Michaliszyn and Devin Stone/Jon Deroo.
In singles action, five Crusaders posted straight-sets wins, with Coryell topping James Bamberger (6-3, 7-6), Jarrett Teel edging Anirudh Kalathil (6-2, 6-1), Christian Wright sweeping Nedzad Ildrizonic (6-0, 6-0), Michaliszyn besting Evan Lu (6-0, 6-0) and Jordan Letterman beating Yosef Bedair (6-2, 6-1).
On the women's draw, the Crusaders (7-0) swept all six singles match-ups and two of the three doubles contests. Karson Phipps teamed with Carly McAtee on a 7-5 decision, and Neely Bridges and Courtney Yates also pulled out a 7-5 victory to help EU claim the doubles point.
In singles play, Eleonora Guglielmetti defeated Emily Stevenson (6-2, 7-6), followed by straight-sets wins from Bethany Overturf (7-6, 6-2), McAtee (6-1, 6-1), Phipps (6-3, 6-4) and Yates (6-3, 7-5). Abigail Chaney also came through with a win after claiming a 10-7 edge over Erin Davis in a tie-breaker.
The Crusaders will return to the courts on Oct. 17 with another road match-up against Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
