PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Evangel men's and women's track and field teams kicked off their Indoor season at the Pitt State NAIA/JUCO Invitational Saturday, as freshmen Delaney Weimer and Joey Sylvester headlined a good showing for two short-handed squads.
Weimer received a qualification for nationals in the 60m dash with a time of 7.81 seconds and Sylvester broke an Evangel Indoor record in Pole Vault with a height of 3.85 meters.
"We had a great opening meet," Evangel head track and field coach Brandon Staley said. "I'm really proud of our kids and how they performed. There were a lot of great individual performances. We set a good foundation, but have a lot of room left for growth."
Weimer placed eighth in the 60m dash (7.81), giving her a qualification for nationals in her first collegiate race.
Sylvester broke the Evangel Indoor Pole Vault record with a mark of 3.85 meters, good for third overall. The record was previously held by Dexter Henderson, set in 2007.
Nash Grantham placed fifth in the high jump, with a distance of 1.85 meters.
Matthew Kellerstrass jumped 6.57 meters in the long jump, good for a fifth place ranking.
Jessica Sheil turned in a triple jump of 9.54 meters to finish seventh.
Skylar Adams continued her long-distance success from the fall, finishing seventh in the mile run (5:38.93)
As a team, the Evangel men (15) finished 11th in the 19-team field, while the women (5) checked in at 16th.
Evangel will head to Warrensburg, Missouri to take part in the UCM Mule Indoor Relays on Saturday (Jan. 29). Field events will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Track events beginning at 5:30 p.m.
