SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel softball team dropped its season-opening doubleheader Monday afternoon, 7-6, and 9-4, to William Woods in non-conference action.
Evangel had to rally back from an early deficit in game one to take a 6-3 lead in the sixth inning.
A Josie Allcock single pulled Evangel within a run to score Ashlie Marshall and Kami Holt with only one out in the sixth. After a fielder's choice, a single and a walk, Ali Raley busted a bases-loaded double to left to put the Crusaders up 6-3.
Marshall finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored in the first game to help lead the charge offensively.
Bridget Rippe went 6.2 innings and scattered eight hits. She was charged with just five of the runs and struck out three in the loss.
Evangel and William Woods went back and forth in the second game until the Owls scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 6-3 lead.
The Crusaders scratched across a run in the sixth inning but William Woods had scored twice in the top half of the inning to put the game out of reach.
Evangel left nine runners on base in the second game as both teams combined for 24 hits.
Samantha Romano earned her first collegiate start going three innings and allowing four runs. Taylor Mathis and Emma Hill both came on in relief as Mathis went three innings and Hill pitched the seventh. Romano struck out three while Mathis and HIll both struck out two a piece out of the bullpen.
Evangel is quickly back in action on Tuesday against Ottawa (KS) at Crusader Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
