Valor Softball Splits Doubleheader with Benedictine on Tuesday

Valor Softball Splits Doubleheader with Benedictine on Tuesday

Game One | Game Two

ATCHISON, Kan. – Evangel Softball began a stretch of eight games in five days on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Benedictine. Thanks to excellent pitching in game one, EU gained a lead and held it to claim the victory, 4-0. Game two was a thrilling matchup between both teams as Benedictine outlast EU, 7-6, in the tenth inning.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel's offense grabbed and maintained a lead throughout the entirety of game one, winning 4-0.

  • Abby Jo Emmitt (4-3) was outstanding in the circle in game one, shutting out the Benedictine offense and only giving up two hits.

  • In game two, Evangel and Benedictine battled into the tenth inning, as the Valor came up just short, 7-6.

  • Samantha Romano (2-2) pitched well throughout the entire game, finishing her afternoon throwing 9.1 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel kicked off game one recording hits from three of their four first batters. Mariah Hanner was scored after Brooke Arnold doubled to center field, giving the Valor a 1-0 lead.

  • In the top of the second inning, Ali Raley reached base on a walk and was scored after Karlie Romines sent a two-run home run over the left-center field wall, giving Evangel a 3-0 lead.

  • The Valor tacked on an insurance run in the top of the fourth, when Romines was scored on a Hanner single to center field, making it a 4-0 ballgame.

  • Emmitt could not be touched in the circle in game one, giving up just two hits and striking out four batters to record the complete game shutout.

  • In game two, Evangel got hot on offense early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Hanner walked and was scored on a Josie Allcock single. Morgan Shockley and Allcock were scored after Annslee Leeviraphan reached on a fielder's choice, and Arnold crossed home plate after Megan Stone hit a sacrifice fly, giving EU a 3-0 lead.

  • Benedictine added two runs of their own in the second inning, narrowing Evangel's lead to just one run, 3-2.

  • Evangel scored another two runs in the top of the fifth when Romines again came in clutch with a two-run double, scoring Stone and Arnold.

  • The Ravens found more offense and tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring three runs off Romano.

  • Neither team could capitalize and score any baserunners until the 10th inning when Benedictine scored on a walk-off double, taking the game 7-6.

NOTABLE

  • Emmitt recorded her 39th career win in the circle in game one and her ninth career shutout.

  • Romines hit her first career home run in game one.

  • Romines also recorded her eighth RBI of the season in game two, guiding Evangel's offense throughout the afternoon.
