Valor Softball Continues Hot Streak, Sweeps Peru State on Senior Day

Valor Softball Continues Hot Streak, Sweeps Peru State on Senior Day

Game 1: Evangel 7, Peru State 1 | Box Score

Game 2: Evangel 3, Peru State 1 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (11-9-1, 6-4), Peru State (8-13, 3-7)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (University Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel finished their eight game stretch over five days on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader matchup against Peru State. Game one was dominated by the Valor as a strong offensive output along with excellent pitching by Abby Jo Emmitt led EU to a 7-1 victory. Game two was a battle between both teams with Evangel taking the victory, 3-1, after a strong sixth inning of play.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • An 11-hit offensive downpour from the Valor allowed EU to score seven runs in the first game of the afternoon.

  • Emmitt (6-4) had a great game in the circle, allowing just one run score while striking out 11 batters.

  • Game two had much less offense, but the Valor were able to capitalize in the sixth inning and score their go-ahead runs.

  • Micaiah Cordell (1-3) pitched well in game two, having just one unearned run score and Samantha Romano shut down the Bobcat offense to receive a save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel used a huge first inning of offense to take a 4-0 lead to kick off game one. Megan Stone doubled to center field and scored on a Brooke Arnold double. Arnold scored when Ali Raley doubled to left field. Annslee Leeviraphan loaded the bases with a single after Josie Allcock walked. Cayleigh Berry worked the count and scored Raley on a single to reload the bases for Morgan Shockley who grounded out to score Allcock.

  • Both teams grew cold over the following three innings, recording very little on offense and no runs total. Peru State broke their scoreless streak when they scored on a wild pitch.

  • The Valor quickly regained their four run lead in the following half inning when Abigail Posten singled to score Shockley who had singled to get on base.

  • EU tacked on an additional two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, after Berry singled to score Allcock and Shockley recorded a sacrifice fly to score Leeviraphan.

  • Emmitt continued to shut down the Bobcats and closed the door in the seventh, giving EU the 7-1 victory.

  • Game two resulted in less offense for both squads as each starting pitcher gave up very little in the hits column. EU scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after Arnold kicked off the inning with a triple. Raley used a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Kaydran Russell, who came in to run for Arnold after her base hit.

  • Peru State tied the ballgame in the top of the sixth inning after putting a runner on second due to an EU error. The runner was scored on a Bobcat single, but Romano shut down any other chance of more runs being scored as she came on to pitch in relief.

  • The Valor retook the lead after Raley placed a bunt between the pitcher and second baseman, scoring both Arnold and Stone who had gotten on base on base hits.

  • Peru State made some noise in the seventh, getting two runners on base, but Romano forced the go-ahead run to ground out, giving EU the 3-1 victory and sweep of the Bobcats.

NOTABLE

  • Raley played well on Saturday, scoring the game winning runs in game two on an excellent bunt and finishing her afternoon going 3-6 with three RBIs.

  • Both Stone and Arnold finished their afternoons with two extra base hits a piece, helping fuel the Valor offense in both the victories.

  • Emmitt recorded her 41st career win in the circle in game one, placing her in complete control of sixth all-time in wins in EU Softball history.

  • Emmitt also took sole possession of the #2 spot in strikeouts in a career at Evangel with 495 after a stellar outing on Saturday.

QUOTABLE

"I am incredibly proud of my team. Raley had an exceptional day at the plate and displayed great leadership by driving in all three runs in the second game of the day. Both of our starters pitched well in both games and we had a strong effort defensively on the field," Evangel head coach Jay Halbrook said. "These four wins put us back in position to finish the conference season strong and allows us to gain some confidence on both sides of the ball going forward. We have to be ready to compete and come ready to play every game."
