Romano Throws No-Hitter as Valor Sweeps Baker on Tuesday

The Basics:

Game 1 (5 inn.): Evangel 8, Baker 0 | Box Score

Game 2: Evangel 3, Baker 1 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (13-9-1, 8-4), Baker (16-11, 7-7)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (University Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – On Tuesday afternoon, Valor Softball hosted the Wildcats of Baker in a doubleheader matchup between Heart South foes. In game one, Samantha Romano was untouchable as she recorded a no-hitter, her second of the season, to shut down Baker, 8-0. In the second game of the afternoon, both teams struggled to generate offense, but solid pitching and fielding for Evangel led the Valor to the two game sweep of Baker, 3-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Romano (4-2) put on a show in game one, finishing her afternoon allowing zero hits and striking out six batters.

  • The Valor used a seven run fifth inning to run rule Baker, 8-0, in game one.

  • Game two consisted of much less offense, but the Valor were still able to find key hits in crucial moments to take the win, 3-1.

  • Coming off her Pitcher of the Week honor, Abby Jo Emmitt (7-4) did not allow a run in game two and good relief performances by Ashland Diggs and Micaiah Cordell shut the door on any chance of a Wildcat comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Game one got off to a fast start as neither team generated much of any offense. By the time the fourth inning came around, Evangel had just one hit.

  • The Valor put a run on the board in the fourth after Abigail Posten singled to right field, scoring Josie Allcock, who had gotten on base when she singled to left field.

  • After Romano shut down Baker's top of the fifth inning, the Valor got to work. Cayleigh Berry kicked off the inning by doubling down the left field line and then stole third to set up Megan Stone. Stone tripled to center field and scored both Berry and Annslee Leeviraphan who took first base on a Wildcat error, giving EU a 3-0 lead.

  • Immediately after the Stone triple, Brooke Arnold grounded out to second, giving Stone plenty of time to score the fourth Evangel run.

  • With the bases empty and just one out, Ali Raley singled to third base. Kaydran Russell ran for Raley and moved into scoring position when she stole second base. Both Allcock and Karlie Romines walked to load the bases for Mariah Hanner. Hanner ended Akin's day in the circle by doubling to center field and scoring both Russell and Allcock.

  • Both Posten and Leeviraphan singled on perfectly executed bunts, scoring Romines and Hanner, and giving Evangel the 8-0 run rule victory.

  • In game two, the Valor picked up right where they had left off, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Stone kicked off the inning with a lead-off single, followed by a Raley walk. Both runners stole a base and Stone scored on a sacrifice fly by Arnold. With two outs in the inning, Romines came through with a clutch hit and scored Raley when she singled to right field.

  • Neither team recorded any offense in the second and third innings as Emmitt continued her streak of excellent pitching.

  • In the fourth, Allcock walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hanner came through with another nice hit, scoring Allcock on a single to center field.

  • Baker was able to tack on a run in the sixth inning, but Cordell recorded the save in the seventh after she shut down the Wildcat bats.

NOTABLE

  • Romano threw her second no-hitter of the season in game one on Tuesday.

  • Hanner finished her day with a team leading three RBIs after a 3-6 day at the plate.

  • Allcock and Raley both drew three walks throughout game one and two.

  • Valor Softball recorded their sixth consecutive victory after sweeping Baker, moving to 13-9-1 on the season.
