BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Valor softball team hit the road to take on the Wildcats of Baker on Tuesday (Apr. 26) afternoon. Game one was a defensive affair, with both starting pitchers throwing nine innings as Evangel finally broke through, claiming the victory after they scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and shut down the Wildcat offense. In the second game of the afternoon, Evangel grabbed a lead in the fifth and held it to the end as Abby Jo Emmitt and Ashland Diggs both pitched well to preserve the 5-3 win.

  • Neither team pushed much offense across to score in game one, but in the ninth inning, Evangel scored their go ahead runs to grab a lead that Samantha Romano (11-3) and the Valor defense preserved, 3-1.

  • The second game was similar to the first, but Evangel did not need extras to claim the victory, as they scored four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, 5-3.

  • Emmitt (10-6) pitched well for Evangel, only allowing a single run to score in the first six innings of the game.

  • Diggs claimed the save in game two, after she forced the go ahead run to pop out to second base in the bottom of the seventh, solidifying the Valor win, 5-3.

  • Both Evangel and Baker struggled to get their offense going to begin game one, as neither team recorded a hit in the first three innings.

  • In the top of the fourth, Evangel pushed a run across home plate when Brooke Arnold doubled and scored on a Josie Allcock singled to right field.

  • In the bottom of the fourth, Baker responded, scoring a run of their own on a single to first base.

  • Neither team scored any runs throughout the next four innings, until the ninth inning when Evangel scored their go-ahead runs. Arnold kicked off the inning with a single and Ali Raley followed with a single of her own. Sarah Cummings ran for Raley and Mariah Hanner singled to load the bases. Kaydran Russell used a clutch base hit to score both Arnold and Cummings, giving EU the 3-1 lead.

  • Romano struck out the first two batters of the bottom of the ninth and forced a ground out to grab the complete game victory.

  • In the second game, Baker scored first in the bottom of the second, and the Valor quickly tied the game up in the third when Karlie Romines scored on an Allcock groundout.

  • Evangel took a 2-1 lead when Romines was scored on an Arnold sacrifice fly.

  • A Hanner single, Abigail Posten walk, and a Cayleigh Berry bunt single loaded the bases for Evangel in the sixth inning. Romines and Megan Stone both used good patience to force bases loaded walks, scoring Hanner and Posten. Arnold then singled to score Berry, giving Evangel a 5-1 lead.

  • Baker threatened the Evangel lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh and with two runners on and the game winning run at the plate, Diggs forced a pop up to give Evangel the victory, 5-3.

  • Arnold continued her excellent offense this season by going 3-6 with two runs and two RBIs.

  • Emmitt recorded her 10th win in the circle this season in game two as Romano recorded her 11th.

  • Evangel snapped their three game losing streak by sweeping Baker.

Evangel will return home for their final home doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 27) afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against the Pirates of Park.
