Record: Evangel (24-17-1), William Penn (26-21)

Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Busse Field)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Valor took on the Statesmen of William Penn on Thursday morning for the first game of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Softball Championships, looking to grab a win and advance to the next day of games. A back and forth battle ensued throughout the game and ultimately, extras were needed to determine a winner. It was William Penn who came out victorious in the eighth inning after they scored two to take a lead they would not relinquish, 5-4.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel used timely hitting and good starting pitching to stay in the game with William Penn, but too many fielding errors hurt the Valor.

  • Ali Raley and Brooke Arnold both launched home runs in the game as EU fell short of the mark, falling 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a 1-2-3 first inning, Evangel came up to bat looking to grab an early lead. Arnold would do just that, launching a leadoff solo home run to left field to give Evangel a 1-0 lead.

  • William Penn responded in the top of the fourth when two runs came across to score, one getting on base via error, giving the Statesmen a 2-1 lead.

  • In the bottom of the fourth, Evangel responded to the William Penn runs, by tying the game up at two runs a piece when Megan Stone walked and scored on a Kaydran Russell groundout.

  • In Evangel's next inning, Raley blasted a double off the left field wall, scoring Josie Allcock, who had doubled to get on base, giving the Valor a 3-2 lead.

  • Samantha Romano shut down the Statesmen bats in the sixth inning and pushed the Valor to within one out of clinching the game. William Penn used clutch hitting to score the game tying run on a full count in the top of the seventh, making the score 3-3.

  • After not scoring in the bottom of the seventh, Evangel struggled to stop the William Penn offense in the top of the eighth. Three hits and a costly error allowed two runs to score for the Statesmen, giving them a 5-3 lead.

  • In Evangel's final inning, Raley blasted a solo home run to give Evangel a chance and life on offense. The Valor were able to get two more runners on base, but fell just short of tying the game up, falling 5-4 in eight innings.

NOTABLE

  • Raley recorded her fifth home run of the season while Arnold tacked on her third.

  • Romano struck out five batters over her seven innings pitched, allowing just one earned run in the loss.

  • Abby Jo Emmitt pitched an inning in relief, getting Evangel out of trouble in the eighth by striking out two batters.
