All-Around Effort Pushes Evangel to Victory Over NAIA Ranked Grand View

The Basics

Score: #4 Evangel 8, #2 Grand View 0 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (26-17-1), Grand View (42-9)

Location: Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Busse Field)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – After defeating Culver-Stockton late last night, Evangel moved to the next elimination game against the number 10 team in the nation in Grand View. Continuing to fight with the survive and advance mentality, the Valor pulled off the upset of the high ranked Vikings team, 8-0.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Samantha Romano claimed the win in the circle, moving to 13-5 on the season after pitching 6.0 innings, allowing just eight hits.

  • Cayleigh Berry had a great game on offense, finishing with five RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the bottom of the first, Evangel kicked off the scoring for both teams. Ali Raley got on base on a Grand View error and Megan Stone walked to follow. Kaydran Russell singled to load the bases for Berry. Berry displayed clutch hitting when she singled to score both Raley and Stone, giving Evangel a 2-0 lead.

  • The Valor again added two runs in the third inning. Raley singled to kick the inning off as Morgan Shockley came in to run for her. Shockley advanced to second on a Stone sacrifice bunt. Josie Allcock doubled, moving Shockley to third. Berry again showed the clutch factor, singling to score both Allcock and Shockley, making it a Valor 4-0 lead.

  • Evangel continued to shut down the Vikings offense and furthered the distance on the scoreboard by tacking on a pair of runs. Annslee Leeviraphan singled up the middle and advanced to second on a Brooke Arnold sacrifice bunt. Raley then singled, scoring Leeviraphan. After a Stone and Allcock walk to load the bases, Russell singled to score Raley, making it a 6-0 Evangel lead.

  • The Valor ultimately run ruled Grand View when in the sixth inning, Raley singled, Stone doubled, and Allcock walked, loading the bases. Berry and Karlie Romines both singled, scoring the final two runs and solidifying the 8-0 victory.

NOTABLE

  • Romano claimed her 13th win of the season in the game.

  • Berry had a great game, finishing with five RBIs for the Valor.

  • Raley stayed hot on offense, going 3-4 for Evangel and scoring 3 runs.
