Valor Softball Continues to Persevere in Elimination Games, Defeats Benedictine

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Continuing their trend of elimination games, Evangel took on Benedictine to determine who would advance to the next round to take on Central Methodist. Evangel built a big enough lead to survive a scare in the seventh inning, taking the win, 5-4.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Abby Jo Emmitt (11-7) displayed excellent starting pitching for Evangel, striking out five batters and allowing just two runs to score.

  • Josie Allcock drove in two runs, leading the Valor. Brooke Arnold also contributed to the offense with a solo home run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel continued their trend of scoring in the first inning, by pushing across three runs. Ali Raley drew a walk and Megan Stone was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Allcock doubled, scoring both of the runners. Karlie Romines singled to get Allcock home, giving EU a 3-0 lead.

  • Benedictine tacked on their first run of the game when they tripled home a lead off hit batter.

  • Raley reached on an error in the fifth inning and Morgan Shockley came in to run. Shockley stole second and then scored on an Benedictine miscue, giving EU a 4-1 lead.

  • The Ravens answered EU's run by scoring a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, on a double and single, making it 4-2.

  • In the top of the seventh inning, Arnold blasted a solo home run to left center field, pushing EU's lead to 5-2.

  • Benedictine made the game interesting as they pushed two runs across to score, but ultimately Emmitt struck out the final batter, giving the Valor a 5-4 victory.

NOTABLE

  • Emmitt claimed her 11th win of the season in the game.

  • Allcock scored her 20th and 21st RBIs of the year in the game.

  • Arnold blasted her fourth home run of the season in the seventh inning.

UP NEXT

Evangel is currently taking on the NAIA ranked #9 Central Methodist Eagles in another elimination game. The winner will advance to tomorrow's championship game against Mount Mercy at noon.
