SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – An early deficit was too much for the Evangel women's basketball team to overcome Saturday falling, 77-56 to Clarke University in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

The Crusaders started cold in the first half as the Pride built a 20-point lead midway through the second quarter. Evangel battled to cut the lead to 11 at halftime trailing 37-26.

A big run to start the second half saw Evangel cut the Clarke lead to three points in the final minute of the third quarter at 52-49 after a pair of free throws from Bailey Harman.

However, Clarke managed to hang on and fight off an early run by the Crusaders in the fourth quarter when Lexi Vaught blocked a shot and drove the length of the floor as her bucket pulled Evangel within 56-51. Vaught led Evangel with 16 points and six boards.

Emma Lander and Mackenzie Farmer also finished in double figures with 13 and 12 points each, as Lander pulled down eight boards and Farmer added four assists.

Makenna Haase led Clarke with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds as the Pride forced 19 Evangel turnovers and tallied 13 steals to help aid in the win.

Evangel heads back on the road next Wednesday at conference leader and 4th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene. Tipoff from Olathe, Kansas is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
