SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A big second half helped the Evangel women's basketball team push to an 81-69 victory over John Brown University on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

After going back and forth through the first four minutes of the first quarter, the Crusaders used a 7-0 run to build an early lead and never look back. Evangel moved to 1-2 on the season with each of its losses coming to nationally ranked teams, while John Brown saw its record even to 2-2.

"We found some matchups that worked really well for us tonight," said head coach Megan Leuzinger. "An advantage for us is having depth and you saw that against John Brown. Emma (Lander) and Bailey (Harman) gave us some great minutes off the bench and we started to see some lineups come together."

The Crusaders bench outscored the Golden Eagles bench, 47-20 and was led by 12 points from Bailey Harman. Emma Lander added 10 points off the bench as well for Evangel and pulled down seven rounds.

Lexie Vaught neared a triple-double as she finished with 10 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists in the win.

Defensively the Crusaders were able to help pace an offense that shot 58 percent in the third quarter to pull away from John Brown.

"When our defense gets stops it helps our transition game," Leuzinger added. "I thought shots started to fall in the second half because of our defense. I also really liked our energy tonight. It was really high and that helped us get going."

Evangel finished 10 of 23 from behind the three-point line while holding JBU to 7 of 23, and also outrebounding the Golden Eagles, 47-39.

The Crusaders start conference play on Saturday at Mount Mercy. Tipoff from Cedar Rapids, Iowa is scheduled for 12 p.m.
