SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A hot-start and solid defense helped the Evangel women's basketball team to its third straight win Wednesday night 60-53 over Graceland in Heart Conference play.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 27-13 lead in the first quarter but the Yellowjackets nearly reversed the second-quarter score. Evangel took a 34-38 lead into halftime and needed second-half defense to finish off Graceland.
"I appreciate the effort our girls gave tonight from the entire group," said head coach Megan Leuzinger. "We started out the game extremely well, and then let Graceland get back into the game. We showed nice glimpses offensively and defensively at times. Hats off to Graceland for not giving up and continuing to fight."
Evangel forced 19 turnovers and shot 40 percent in the first half as Brianna Vogts led the way with 11 points.
Graceland pulled within five points at 47-42 at the 7:13 mark of the third quarter. However, Alexis Cauthon answered with the three-pointer to start a 10-2 run for the Crusaders. Cauthon was one of four players to finish with six points joining Sadie Chisum, Kylee Moore, and Courtney Austin.
The Crusaders knocked down 10 three-pointers as a team and held Graceland to just three from behind the arc. The balanced scoring attack continued with seven points from Anne Marie Anibal and eight from Bayley Harman.
"It wasn't necessarily a pretty win," Leuzinger added. "But we are thankful to be able to continue to protect our home court."
