SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A smothering defensive performance by the Evangel women's basketball team Saturday gave the Crusaders a 77-64 Heart Conference win over Peru State.
The Crusaders forced 22 turnovers and led by as many as 28 to improve to 3-0 in Heart Conference play and 4-2 overall. Evangel recorded nine steals as well as finishing with 18 assists.
"I was very pleased with our defensive effort tonight," said head coach Megan Leuzinger. "We did not allow Peru State to get easy looks, especially in the first half."
Evangel shot 42 percent in the first half to build a 39-20 lead at halftime before cooling off in the second half. However, the Crusaders continued to take advantage of unforced errors and went 22 of 31 from the free-throw line in the win.
Senior Emma Lander recorded a double-double as she tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds for Evangel. In total 11 different players found the scoring column for the Crusaders in the win.
"We had some great opportunities to knock down shots in the second half offensively, but we had some trouble converting at times," Leuzinger added. "I thought we had solid minutes from a lot of people tonight, which was great to see!"
Claire Cudney also tallied a double-double for Peru State finishing with 15 points and 12 boards.
Evangel continues Heart action Tuesday night on the road at Central Methodist. Tipoff from Fayette, Missouri is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
