FAYETTE, Mo. — Double-double from senior Lexie Vaught and sophomore Brianna Vogts helped the Evangel women's basketball team upset 12th-ranked Central Methodist, 89-84, Tuesday night in Heart. Conference play.

The Crusaders moved to 4-0 in Heart action knocking off previously unbeaten Central Methodist. The. Eagles fall to 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in conference action.

The game saw 19 ties and 11 lead changes with 10 of the ties and five lead changes coming in the fourth quarter.

I am super proud of our entire team tonight," said head coach Megan Leuzinger. "We had energy from every single player tonight! We knew this was going to be a tough game, especially at Central Methodist. Our girls came out and fought from the tip-off."

The final lead for the Crusaders came with 31 seconds left as Kylee Moore knocked down a pair of free throws to push the lead to 86-85. Moore was one of five Crusaders to finish in double figures with 10 points.

From there Evangel would fight off the Eagles who saw three final attempts in the final 31 seconds. Freshman Sadie Chisum and Vogts who both sink two free throws to help seal the victory.

"Kylee and Sadie did an incredible job handling the ball for us tonight," Leuzinger added. "Lexie and Bri were great offensively and defensively for us and really crashed the glass well."

The Crusaders dominated on the boards out-rebounding Central Methodist 50-33. The effort helped Evangel outscore Central Methodist 33-23 in the fourth quarter.

Vogts led all scorers with 20 points as she also pulled down 15 rebounds. Vaught added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Evangel as she also went 5 of 10 from the field.

Central Methodist got 18 points from Mercedes Jefflo and 17 points from Cheyenne Allen.

Evangel did have to overcome 22 turnovers and a 4 for 13 shooting effort from behind the arc. However, the Crusaders went 29 of 39 from the free-throw line to shoot 74 percent in the win.

"This was an incredible win to continue staying undefeated in the Heart," Leuzinger said. "To have 5 girls score in double figures is a testament to our depth, and our girls working together for a common goal.

Evangel returns home Monday to host Baker in Heart action. Tipoff from the Ashcroft Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
