SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A solid 40-minute effort saw the Evangel women's basketball team lead start to finish Saturday in a 77-44 victory over Mount Mercy in Heart Conference action.

The Crusaders jumped out to a big first-quarter lead holding the Mustangs to just three points. The defense helped spur an 18-3 first quarter for Evangel.

"Shots were not falling for us initially, so that was a testament to our girls to just keep shooting," said head coach Megan Leuzinger. "We still did a good job of getting out and guarding.  We never want to let the score dictate how you play, but that's been a big focus since coming back from Christmas."

Evangel locked down Mount Mercy who shot just 20 percent in the first half, and 30 percent in the game. The Crusaders managed to shoot 39 percent in the second half and knocked down 12 three-pointers.

Defensively, the Crusaders forced 23 turnovers marking the second straight game forcing 20 or more turnovers.

"I really liked the fact today we were able to play a lot of different girls and every one of them stepped up," Leuzinger added. "Lexie didn't have the greatest offensive game, but she had 11 rebounds. That's really the mentality of all our girls. When you step on the floor give your team quality minutes, and I thought everyone did that today."

Four different Crusaders led the team in scoring with Emma Lander, Lexie Vaught both scoring 10 points, while Courtney Austin and Brianna Vogts came off the bench to finish with 10 as well. Vaught finished with a double-double adding 11 boards.

Offensively, the Crusaders also finished with 19 assists as a team as 12 different players had at least one assist.

Mount Mercy was led by Sara Moffett who finished with 12 points and six boards.

Evangel heads back on the road Thursday for a Heart matchup against Baker. Tipoff from Baldwin City, Kansas is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
