SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A triple-double from senior Lexie Vaught helped pace the Evangel women's basketball to an upset of No. 23 Culver-Stockton, 89-75, on Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders went back and forth with the Wildcats through the first half as a three-pointer at the buzzer gave Culver-Stockton a 45-41 lead into intermission.
"It was a great team effort today," said head coach Megan Leuzinger. "I am super proud of how our girls dug in defensively in the second half."
However, Evangel turned it on in the second half starting with a three-pointer from Sadie Chisum at the six-minute mark. The Crusaders went on a 13-3 run to build a 64-56 lead.
Vaught helped lead a balanced scoring attack for the Crusaders with 16 points as Alexis Cauthon led the way with 17 points. Vaught turned in a triple-double as she tallied 11 steals and 10 rebounds in the win.
"Lexie's performance was stellar," Leuzinger added. "I thought we competed the full game but especially in the second half. We shared the ball extremely well with 27 assists and took care of the ball."
Defensively, the Crusaders forced 19 turnovers and held the Wildcats to 27 percent from the field in the second half. Evangel shot 46 percent from the field in the game.
The upset of No. 23 Culver-Stockton is sponsored by St. George's Donuts.
Evangel continues home action Wednesday against MidAmerica Nazarene. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
