SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel women's basketball team caught fire in the second half to knock off MidAmerica Nazarene 65-58 Wednesday night in Heart Conference action.
The Crusaders used a 21-13 third-quarter advantage to pull away from the Pioneers in the second half.
"We are continuing to find a way to win," said head coach Megan Leuzinger. "I am super proud of our team's effort and drive."
Despite knocking down just three, three-pointers, Evangel out-rebounded MNU 38-28 and shot 44 percent from the field. That effort saw the Crusaders go on a 10-3 run after trailing by two at halftime to take a seven-point lead.
Although Evangel led only by as many as eight, the Crusaders would never trail from the 7:40 mark in the third quarter on.
After posting a triple-double on Saturday, Lexie Vaught earned a double-double finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. She also handed out six assists and recorded five steals in the win.
"We really locked it in defensively at key moments in the game," Leuzinger added. "We did a great job of limiting our turnovers in the second half."
The Crusaders turned the ball over just three times in the second half to help seal the win.
MidAmerica Nazarene was led by 18 points from Whitney Clampitt.
Evangel heads to Iowa on Saturday for a matchup with Grand View. Tipoff from Des Moines, Iowa is scheduled for 12 p.m.
