SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Crusaders dropped a heartbreaker against the #3 Southeastern (Fla.) Fire on Saturday night.

Both teams played a defensive battle in the first half, with neither squad being able to find the back of the net, although there were plenty of chances.

This trend continued well into the second half, with both defenses holding strong. The breakthrough came for the Fire in the 68th minute when Aisha Solorzano fired home a shot from a tight angle that was able to make it past Caitlyn Cox in the goal.

The Crusaders didn't let conceding a goal get them down. They continued to the attack and had a couple of close shots in the dying minutes of the game. Alyson Reinold had a shot that the goalie was able to save, while Ashley Ard missed wide by a few inches.

"To say that I am incredibly proud of our play this evening would be quite the understatement," head coach Bruce Deaton said after the game. "While we dropped the match, 1-0, that is indeed a great result for us against the team that is ranked 3rd in the nation.  We had a couple of real chances throughout the match and in the final few minutes to level the match with a tieing goal.   We did an incredible job defending against one of the best-attacking teams, in terms of goal production last year, in the nation. But again, I am very excited about the season that lies ahead for us.   All I can truly say is well-done ladies, well done!!!!"

Offensively, the Crusaders tallied five shots with four being on goal. Reinold, Sedona Townsend, Bailey Biffert, and Rachel Williams all had a shot on goal. Defensively Caitlyn Cox made five saves between the sticks and only conceded one goal.

The Fire tallied 23 shots, with six being on goal. They were led by Uchenna Kanu who had nine shots (two on goal), Aisha Solorzano who had five shots (two on goal) and the game's lone goal, and Bania Duran who had four shots.
