SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Three second-half goals helped the Evangel women's soccer team to its fifth straight win Saturday 3-0 against Mount Mercy in Heart of America action.
"Even though it took a bit to truly get going today, I love how we played throughout the match and especially the second half," said head coach Bruce Deaton.
Playing to a scoreless tie at halftime, the pep talk at intermission paid off. The Crusaders burst out with a goal in the 63rd minute from Bailey Biffert to make it 1-0 Evangel.
From there both the offense and defense would finish a complete half holding the Mustangs to just three shots in the second half while peppering the goal with 24 on the offensive end.
"We did another superb job of defending and limited their opportunity to create chances or get shots," Deaton said. "We were able to find attacking spaces and score two nice goals during a run of play and a great shot on a set-piece. It's been a great first week of conference play!"
While the one goal was all Evangel would need Alyson Reinold connected on a free kick in the 81st minute for her fourth goal of the season to give Evangel a 2-0 lead.
Defensively the Evangel backfield held Mount Mercy to no shots in the first half. Caitlyn Cox recorded one save in goal for Evangel as well.
Evangel continues conference play at Coryell Field Wednesday against MidAmerica Nazarene. Play is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
