DES MOINES, Iowa – An early lead helped the Evangel women's soccer team stay unbeaten in Heart Conference play with a 2-1 road victory Saturday at Grand View University.

With the milestone win, the Crusaders likely have secured a spot in the Heart Postseason Tournament for the first time in program history. In fact, the win also sets up the largest game in the young history of Evangel women's soccer on Wednesday against fellow unbeaten and 8th-ranked Central Methodist.

"Today was a special win for our Evangel women's soccer program," said. Head coach Bruce Deaton. "We continue to attack strongly as a team and create great chances and were able to convert those."

"Pending the outcomes from the remainder of play this weekend in the conference, I believe we have likely achieved our first big team goal with today's outcome," Deaton added. "I am so proud of what these ladies are doing every time they step on the field!"

Evangel jumped out to an early lead and held off Grand View to stay near the top of the league standings.

The first of two early first-half goals saw Bianca Biffert net her 12th goal of the season in the 11th minute to put the Crusaders up 1-0.

Barely two minutes after Biffert's goal, Shannon Murphy scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Crusaders.

Despite the early goals the Crusaders also battled the Iowa weather.

"The conditions, especially the wind, made our second half more interesting," Deaton said. "But the ladies once again defended so well throughout the match and absolutely buckled down after conceding the goal in the second half."

Evangel held a 17-13 shot advantage over the Vikings while Caitlyn Cox finished with four saves before Abbey Schmidt added three saves.

Evangel returns home Wednesday to host No. 8 Central Methodist in a battle of unbeaten teams atop the Heart of America Athletic Conference. First touch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Coryell Field.
