Pair of Goals Leads to Valor Victory over Stephens College

Pair of Goals Leads to Valor Victory over Stephens College

The Basics

Score: Evangel 2, Stephens 1 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (1-1-0), Stephens (0-1-0)

Location: Columbia, Mo. (Battle HS Soccer Field)

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer hit the road on Wednesday evening, looking to rebound from a tough loss to a nationally ranked John Brown team, by facing off with the Stephens College Stars. A pair of Valor goals proved to be enough for Evangel, as they came away with a 2-1 victory.

Evangel and Stephens spent the majority of the first half getting into their offense, as the Valor were able to put up four shots in the first 22 minutes. With 14 minutes remaining in the first half, Evangel turned their offense up and were able to keep the ball on the attacking end of the field, making the Stephens defense work to keep the ball out of the goal. After a goal kick by Stephens failed to get to a teammate, Evangel turned up the pressure. A nice through pass from Annslee Glenn and Maddy Wanner set up Reese Hertel for a shot on the right side of the field that she put in just out of the goalie's outstretched arm, giving Evangel a 1-0 lead that they took into the half.

Both the Valor and Stars struggled to generate much offense to kick off the second half, as each team combined for just one shot within the first 18 minutes of the half. With 27 minutes remaining in the match, Stephens once again had a goal kick intercepted by the Evangel defense. The Valor were able to push the pace off the interception and another through pass, this time from Anna Crain, set up Samantha Elliott for the second Valor goal of the day. Evangel continued to ramp up their defensive play, but with just five minutes remaining in the match, the Valor committed a penalty in the box, giving the Stars a penalty kick that they nailed, cutting the Valor lead to a single goal, 2-1. With the game within the Stars reach, Evangel eliminated any comeback hopes by taking care of the ball as they claimed the game, 2-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Elliott and Hertel both recorded their first goals of the season, as well as the first goals of their career.

  • Crain recorded her second assist of the season in the second half. Glenn recorded her first assist of the season in the first half, the second assist of her career.

  • Wanner's assist in the first half was the first of her season and career.
  • Chloe Hancock stayed in at goalkeeper for the entire game, finishing with five saves and allowing just one goal on a penalty kick.

QUOTABLE

"What a great win this evening for the ladies. We defended much better this evening, but are still continuing to grow on that side of the ball," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "Both goals were brilliant moments with us moving the ball from one side of the field to the other to overload the defense and find the open player. Reese and Sam's goals were very nice and overall led to a nice night of soccer."

UP NEXT

Evangel will take almost a week off before they play their next opponent, Missouri Baptist, at home next Tuesday (Aug. 30) at 6:00 p.m.
