Valor Women's Soccer Falls in Conference Opener on Wednesday

Valor Women's Soccer Falls in Conference Opener on Wednesday

The Basics

Score: Evangel 0, (13) Missouri Valley 3 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (3-4-0, 0-1-0), Missouri Valley (4-1-1, 1-0-0)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer kicked off their final season of conference play in the Heart of America Athletic Conference on Wednesday night as they took on nationally ranked Missouri Valley. Despite keeping close through the first half, the Valor could not produce a strong offensive attack to overcome the Vikings, 3-0.

Evangel survived the Viking offensive attack in the first 28 minutes, as MVC produced 11 shots and kept the ball in the Valor's defensive end. Right before the 30 minute mark of the game, Missouri Valley found their first goal of a game on a header in the box to make it 1-0. Nearly seven minutes later, the Vikings added to the total by hitting a goal on a corner kick to take a 2-0 lead into the half.

The Valor kicked the second half off with a great offensive attack, leading to a shot by Madison Maher that ended just wide left of the goal. MVC ramped up their defense and intercepted a pass at the 58 minute mark of the game and made use of the turnover, scoring their third and final goal of the game to take a 3-0 lead. Evangel's offense continued to trend up in terms of success and at the 70 minute mark, Anna Crain attempted a 20 yard shot that just barely hit the top crossbar, keeping EU off the scoreboard. The Valor were able to tack on one final shot on a Samantha Elliott shot, but ultimately fell, 3-0.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Crain, Elliott, and Maher all tacked on a shot a piece in the loss.

  • Chloe Hancock added eleven saves to her season total which currently sits at 57.

QUOTABLE

"We knew going into the match how strong they (MVC) were. We trained a new formation to prepare and while we did well with it, they still stretched us in the first half. We made another adjustment at halftime and I felt we competed at a much higher level after. We will take the positives from tonight and build on it for our next match," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "I'm very proud of our back four for how well they did under pressure and am absolutely proud of how hard the ladies worked throughout the match. Playing one of the top teams in the conference and nation helped position us to compete with every other team throughout our conference schedule."

UP NEXT

Evangel will hit the road to take on (RV) Benedictine on Saturday (Sept. 17) evening at 5:00 p.m. in Atchison, Kan.
