OLATHE, Kan. – The Evangel volleyball team saw its perfect start to the 2020 season come to an end, as MidAmerica Nazarene rode the momentum of a late 6-0 run in the opening stanza to a straight-set (25-21, 25-15, 25-11) victory over the Crusaders Friday evening at Bell Family Arena.

The Pioneers seized control with their six-point surge to close a tightly-contested opening set, then overpowered the previously-unbeaten Crusaders by hitting a combined .418 over the final two sets. Jennifer Roth registered a game-high 15 kills, including 12 over the final two sets to propel MNU to a sweep en route to its second-straight Heart win to start the season.

In the opener, Evangel built a 16-12 advantage behind the play of Tori Lowry, who logged five kills and three digs in the first set. MNU rallied to take the next six points, then closed out the win with six more unanswered after the Crusaders took a 21-19 edge.

MNU played near-flawless volleyball in the second, winning eight of the first 10 points and hiking its lead to as many as 11 points. The Pioneers piled up 16 kills while committing just one attack error (.417), with Roth accounting for seven kills.

Conversely, Evangel struggled to generate a consistent attack, hitting just .051 in the second set, before finishing the third with an even (.000) attack efficiency (seven kills and seven errors).

Roth and the Pioneers closed the match with another strong showing, winning five straight points to claim a 7-2 advantage. They would continue to extend that margin, putting the finishing touches on the win by taking 10 of the last 13 points.

MNU concluded the night hitting .383 with just six errors as a team, while holding EU to a team mark of .063 for the match.

Lowry led EU with eight kills, while Jorden Stacey finished with 16 assists.
