BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Evangel volleyball team continued its strong start to the 2020 season with a four-set victory (25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 25-18) over Baker Friday evening at the Collins Center. The Crusaders swept the first two sets, then withstood a Wildcat rally to win a decisive victory in the fourth to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Tori Lowry's double-double (12 kills, 14 digs) led EU, while Bridgette Peterson added 12 kills and Regan Ansley tallied 10 kills. EU's defense set the tone, as the Crusaders limited BU to a 0.123 attack efficiency for the match.
Evangel, which swept the Wildcats in straight sets in Springfield on Sept. 15, rallied from a five-point deficit to take the opening set, riding a strong defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack that featured four different players recording at least three kills. Ansley paced EU with four kills, while Lowry added three—including back-to-back winners as part of the Crusaders' decisive run to close out the game.
After splitting the first six points of the second stanza, the Crusaders took control with a 13-5 scoring spurt and never looked back. EU extended its lead to as many as nine points, as Lowry put away four more kills in the set.
Baker bounced back to seize an early 10-2 advantage in the third, only to watch EU rally with a big run of its own. The Crusaders won 15 of the next 21 points to take a slim lead, but the Wildcats answered with a late surge to claim their first set.
EU trailed 8-5 in the fourth set, but won three-straight points to even the ledger before pulling away with a 10-3 run. Once again the Crusader defense proved critical, limiting BU to just 0.065 hitting in the set.
