FAYETTE, Mo. – After a long non-conference schedule, the Valor Volleyball team kicked off conference play on Tuesday night against 15th ranked Central Methodist. Without leading attacker Tori Lowry, Evangel fought hard, taking a set against the nationally ranked opponent, but fell 3-1.
Evangel fell behind early in the first set, trailing by five at the most, but earned some points back and made it a two point game, trailing 18-16. CMU ended the set on a 7-4 run, retaining the five point cushion they previously had in the set, 25-20. The Valor came out firing in the second set. Despite not having Lowry, EU showed grit and determination by fighting back against the Eagles. After trailing for the first half of the second set, the Valor went on a 4-0 and 3-0 run to grab a lead they maintained to the end of the set, claiming a 25-20 win. The Valor again trailed to start the third set, but CMU made sure to stymie any chance at a comeback in the set, using a 5-0 run to end the third, 25-18. In the fourth and final set, Evangel was able to grab a late lead, 18-17, on a Rylie Morrison kill from Sydney Dunavant. The lead proved not large enough for Evangel, as CMU ended the game on a 8-3 run, claiming the final set, 25-21.
Dunavant led the team with 20 assists in the game.
Eryn Russell finished with the team lead of 22 digs against CMU.
Sharayah Seymour finished the game with four block solos and five block assists, for a total of nine blocks in the game.
Evangel will continue road conference play this Friday (Sept. 9) when they take on Peru State in Peru, Neb., at 6:00 p.m.
