Dominant Offensive Play Highlights Valor Volleyball Sweep of Peru State

Dominant Offensive Play Highlights Valor Volleyball Sweep of Peru State

The Basics

Score: Evangel 3, Peru State 0 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (6-7), Peru State (3-5)

Location: Peru, Neb. (Al Wheeler Activity Center)

PERU, Neb. – On Friday night, Valor Volleyball traveled to Peru, Nebraska, to take on the Bobcats of Peru State. Evangel's dominant offense was on full display as the Valor took down Peru State in a three set sweep.

Evangel and Peru State traded points to begin the first set, with the Bobcats taking an early 5-4 lead. The Valor put forth their first 4-0 run of the set when blocks by Abi Menzies and Vivianna Sanchez, followed by kills and a service ace, gave EU an 8-5 lead. With a three point cushion, the Valor found another 4-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 16-9 lead and force a Bobcat timeout. Peru State fought back to make the set close, but a kill and service ace by Sharayah Seymour secured the Valor set victory, 25-19. Halfway through the second set, Peru State had a 10-8 advantage on the scoreboard, but Evangel's Bella Wakley sparked a quick 7-0 run for the Valor. A Wakley kill was followed by 6 successful serve attempts by the freshman, and kills by Menzies and Ciera Reyes gave EU points they needed to grab a lead. The Valor ended the second set on a dominating 17-4 run, taking it 25-14. The final set of the game was dominated by runs. An early 6-1 run out of the gate for Evangel made it appear that the Valor had the game wrapped up, but Peru State responded with a 7-0 run of their own to grab a lead. Evangel knew that with the game within reach of a sweep, they needed to provide offense of their own to climb back. The Valor responded with a 13-3 run, taking a 19-11 lead that they maintained to the end, 25-15.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Menzies and Sanchez led Evangel in kills with 10 apiece.

  • Leah Jackson led the team with 16 assists in the game.

  • Eryn Russell finished with the team lead of 21 digs against Peru State.

  • Evangel finished the game with a .286 attacking percentage, their fourth highest of the season.
