Valor Volleyball Drops Five-Set Barnburner to MNU on Saturday

Valor Volleyball Drops Five-Set Barnburner to MNU on Saturday

The Basics

Score: Evangel 2, (RV) MidAmerica Nazarene 3 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (8-9), MNU (11-0)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Ashcroft Center)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Volleyball hosted the Pioneers of MidAmerica Nazarene on Saturday, looking to break the Pioneers unbeaten streak. Despite coming out slow in the first two sets of the game, the Valor flipped the script and forced the game to go to five sets. Ultimately, MNU built a run in the final set, grabbing a lead and taking the game, 3-2.

Evangel struggled in the first two sets of the match. MidAmerica grabbed early control as the Valor had no answer for the Pioneer attack. The Evangel offense registered just 12 kills in the first two sets and finished with 17 attacking errors, causing the Valor to fall, 25-13 and 25-11 in the beginning sets.

The Pioneers entered the third set, looking to grab a quick sweep of Evangel. As each team traded points to start the set, Evangel finally found their first big run of the game and momentum began to slightly shift to the home squad. A kill by Bella Wakley off a feed from Leah Jackson kicked off a 7-0 run for Evangel, giving the Valor an 15-8 lead. Leading 19-12, MNU did not go down without a fight. The Pioneers racked off a quick 6-0 run to draw the game to a single point, but the Valor answered, ending the set on a 6-3 run, taking the set, 25-21.

MNU controlled the majority of the fourth set by the narrowest of margins. Seemingly every chance Evangel had to grab a lead was countered by the Pioneer offense. As both teams traded points, one team has to eventually use a run to take the set. That team would be the Valor. Trailing 22-21, Evangel took a point on an MNU service error, an MNU attacking error, a block by Vivianna Sanchez and Rylie Morrison, and a game winning kill by Sanchez, taking the set, 25-22.

With just one set remaining, the game began a race to 15. MNU came out rolling on offense and took advantage of Evangel attacking errors to grab an early 6-0 lead. Sharayah Seymour stopped the bleeding for Evangel by recording a kill on a Jackson feed. This kill began to spark life in the Valor once again and EU used a 6-2 run to trail by just two points. With the score at 9-7, each team began to trade points. With both teams tired and determined to win, the Valor used two MNU attacking errors and a kill by Abi Menzies to trail again by just a single point, 13-12. Needing to grab two more points, MNU found the last run of the game, taking a 2-0 run to take the game, 15-12.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ciera Reyes led the Valor with a team high of 11 kills.

  • The setting duo of Jackson and Sydney Dunavant led Evangel with 20 assists a piece.

  • Eryn Russell finished with a team high 26 digs in the loss.

  • The Valor finished with eight total blocks in the game.
