Crusaders Cruise to Big Opening Night at Cottey College Invite

NEVADA, Mo. -- The Evangel men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2020 season with big performances at the Cottey College Invitational Friday. Shane Burns and Emily Standage swept the individual titles, while the EU men captured the team crown.

Burns took the lead in the first mile of the men's race and never looked back, claiming the win with a 25:37.3 effort as five Crusaders finished among the top eight runners in the draw.

On the women's side, Standage ran a patient race before taking the lead for good in the final few hundred meters. Ultimately, she earned the 5K victory with a time of 20:08.9.

"Although tonight was the first 8K for four of our eight men, we are returning a lot of experience this fall and it showed tonight," EU head coach Austin Jacobs stated. "Neither team is at full strength yet, but this was a solid start and a good confidence boost for our entire program."

The men's team formed a pack from the onset of the race, working together in the small field of runners. Following Burns' lead, Grant DeWitt clocked a run of 27:17.5 to finish second, while Matt McHenry (27:47.9) captured a fourth-place finish.

Additionally, Jonathan Dasal (28:17.6) and Evan Espinoza (28:40.9) finished seventh and eighth, respectively in the men's 8K.

The Crusader women placed two additional runners in the top six, with Kyleigh Gibbs (22:17.9) coming in fifth and Taylor Cruzado (22:24.9) placing sixth.
